Summer Internship Opportunity
April 24, 2009BookGlutton.com (located in downtown Urbana) has a few internship opportunities available. Their our main product is an online reading platform that allows people to chat and share annotations inside books. It’s a great opportunity for students to learn about web design and development for static and social networking areas of web design, as well as learn a bit about the cutting edge of publishing. There are 3 positions available (12-16 hours a week): (1) PRODUCTION DEVELOPER: An opportunity to learn about production processes for web development, including exposure to project management, image cropping and manipulation, and HTML editing. We’ll be producing some books in XHTML/EPUB (also known as Adobe Digital Editions format) so this is an opportunity to see how publishing’s new format is structured and manipulated. Activities: edit and create online books by tweaking xhtml and css, some graphics production, site editing and management of the social network. Skills: xml/html, familiarity with PHP preferred but not required. (2) DIGITAL BOOK DESIGNER/GRAPHIC DESIGNER: An opportunity to design elements for an unusual aspect of web design: ebooks. Beyond designing digital book elements students also have exposure to processes for web development, including exposure to project management, image cropping and manipulation. Some ad design or print collateral may be possible depending on student interests. Activities: design elements of online books, particularly dropcaps and header treatments and work on digital book layout. Lend a hand designing ads for clients or HTML newsletters as needed. Skills: Photoshop, Illustrator and familiarity with web design standards. InDesign experience preferred but not required. (3) CSS/FRONTEND DEVELOPER: An opportunity to learn about production processes for web development, including exposure to project management, site migration and internal code management; also an opportunity to work on a social networking site and get involved in new feature development. Studentswill get a chance to be a key figure in the deployment ofbookglutton’s mobile site: a good chance to get iphone and gphone experience. Activities: make regular site updates and bug fixes as needed, and play a big role in testing and deploying the mobile versions of the site. WILL Public Media Seeks Web Designer for Creation of Two Youth Media Websites
February 16, 2009WILL Public Media seeks an experienced web designer to take the lead in developing two project-based websites for our work with youth. This is a grant-funded, hourly position. No benefits. $35/hour gross pay. We are looking for someone who is motivated, creative, excellent communicator and is inspired by the subject matter of the project. The first website, The Youth Media Workshop, is a work in progress. View it at: will.illinois.edu/youthmediaworkshop. We have a redesign in mind and have started to create the new site. We are looking for you to help us finish the redesign and edit, digitize, encode and upload all content from five years of youth projects to the new site, including: photos, raw audio interviews, finished audio and video programs, and more. Redesign of website and all media must be uploaded by June 1, 2009. The second website has yet to be designed. The project is called: Kids of Color Kickin’ It At Kickapoo State Park. This project is a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Danville, Prairie Rivers Network, Kickapoo State Park, Danville Public Library and the Department of Advertising at the College of Media. Website must be completed by October 1, 2009. As part of our work together, you must empower WILL staff and the youth we work with to update content on this website. These are concurrent projects. The successful candidate will work closely on site architecture, design and protocol with two WILL staff members: Jack Brighton (jackb@illinois.edu), WILL Internet Director, and Kimberlie Kranich (kranich@illinois.edu), Co-Director of the Youth Media Workshop at WILL and Director of Community Engagement. Qualifications: The successful web designer candidate will have excellent communications skills and a customer service orientation. We are looking for someone with the following skills: Demonstrated expertise in standards-based, accessible website development using xhtml, css, and JavaScript. Good visual sensibilities and skills in graphic design, and in using software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or Fireworks. Experience developing sites within a website content management system. Expertise in site planning and information architecture. Experience using media production tools and software to digitize, edit, encode and upload audio, video and photos. Experience integrating social media tools including YouTube, Flikr, Google maps, tagging, user-generated content, and moderated discussions into the website.
